The Swiss Council for Educational Research was set up in december 1991. Its role is to coordinate educational research policy amongst its various funding agencies, i.e. the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK/CDIP), the State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER), the Swiss Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology (OPET), and the Swiss National Science Foundation (NSF) and to encourage cooperation between government, administration, practitioners and researches in the field of education.
Its central responsibilities include:
- evaluating the status of the various fields of educational research and developments in them,
- describing the problems of the Swiss educational system and the possible contributions that educational research could make to remedy them,
- initiating, coordinating and supporting the formulation of research projects with a national scope,
- expressing its views on the advisability of a Swiss participation in international research projects,
- submitting recommendations to the competent authorities,
- leveraging the findings of educational research (subsidies for various sorts of organised event in this area, scientific publications, etc.),
- ensuring a permanent exchange of information between educational research and policy.
